I've almost finished digging a flower bed (loosening the compacted soil, getting
out the rocks, etc...

For starters, I'm just going to plant a couple rows of spring bulbs and then
plant some perennials and annuals in the spring.

Since my theme for the garden is "things that have a fighting chance of not
getting totally decimated by the enormous deer population" I'm planting mostly daffodils and
alliums, and some grape hyacinths and a small group of crocuses (don't know if those are
deer- resistant).

So, my question is: if I'm planting bulbs that need to be planted at different
depths, can I plant them closer together than the recommended spacing so they come up in sort
of mixed bouquets? Like if I plant daffodils 6 inches apart, can I plant a grape
hyacinth between them?

Also, can I plant crocuses and grape hyacinths under grass, or will the grass
keep them from coming up?
